Lockin Out Drawing

I was always kind of proud of these drawings. I was experiencing this weird burst of creativity and this interview with Greg Willmott was basically responsible for re-igniting my interest in zines altogether. This drawing was made in response to Greg's telling me that he had a "big ol' dirty closet full of Lockin Out stuff," when I asked him about getting some stuff from the back catalog. It took me forever to do, and I'm not necessarily a master at the "stippling" technique, but I was happy with the way it came out. Plus it was really fun to take some of my favorite LOC releases and re-draw their covers. Also, note the Breakdown poster in the closet.
Also, these were scanned directly from Drug Dogs #1 so that's why they're so grainy. The original drawing is somewhere at my parents' house. Vices

I've known Dakota for years. I even played in a band with him a long time ago. He approached me about doing some designs for his bands which was called Vultures at the time. He described it as "crossover style thrash" a'la late Cro-Mags, Leeway, Violator, etc.

Well, they changed their name to Vices, but luckily I was still able to work with the "V" motif that I'd been playing around with (that I ripped from the old Venture Trucks designs anyway). It seemed like these shirts weren't going to get printed for a while and I was kinda bummed because I was REALLY attached to the reaper one. Anyway, they did get printed and I couldn't be happier with the way they look.

This one was the demo cover (I believe) and the first one I made for the band. I think Dakota was on a pretty heavy Rampage "Head's in a Vice" kick when describing this one, so that's kind of what developed from it. Plus, people being tortured always makes for good HC album or shirt designs.

For a long time I remember seeing a lot of graphics that featured characters wearing that sort of Prussian/Nazi style helmet with the one spike...and I thought it looked rad. Also, it reminds me of this one Judas Priest bootleg concert I saw where Halford rode in on a motorcycle wearing one of those and it looked so dope...so I had to utilize it. This was born to be a pocket-print (and so that's what it was used for) but I really like the pill-chomping thing...especially since I've been on Dr. Recommended candy since I was in the 5th grade. It always makes for good art on Hardcore records and shirts. Just ask Shaun Ryder.This is one of my favorite designs that I've ever done. No joke. Believe it or not, it actually started as a Free Spirit graphic. After a few back n' forths, the dudes decided that it was a little bit "darker" than where they wanted to go and so the idea was scrapped and I fruitlessly worked on a few others before they decided to use another painting instead. No hard feelings. I honestly think the record cover they chose looks great, and one of these days I'll post all of the rejected Free Spirit designs I made because I think it'll be entertaining.

Anyway, when Dakota approached me, I knew that I could make that design work for this band. I basically re-drew the whole thing, but kept the basic idea. I made the reaper look more fearsome and the guy look more depressed, but the best element of all was the giant V motif that I threw in. Anyway, I'm not trying to toot my own horn because I'm a pretty crappy illustrator. I only like about 10% of the designs I make, and I can barely navigate around any Adobe program. At heart I'm just a doodler with a scanner and on occasion it's nice to see something work out.

Atlanta Youth Report zine #8. If you didn't pick one of these up at This is Hardcore, you're a dummy. They were in the awesome hand screened envelopes. Stan got in touch, told me to do a variation on the "Heroin kid" from the Cause for Alarm album cover and this is what I came up with. I'm happy with it.

WRITTEN OFF demo/shirt artwork. Coming out soon. Some good friends in a rad hardcore band from Louisville. If you know your skateboard history, you should be able to recognize where I ripped this dude's "pose."

Yes, one of my all time best friends is in this band, so naturally I'm going to heap giant amounts of praise on them. They rule and play hardcore the way it was when I first got into it. Right Brigade-y/Slaphshot-y style. I love this design and can't wait to see it on a shirt.

These designs weren't necessarily used for shirts, and they're just the sketches. Most bands/labels were appreciative of the work, but just didn't have a need for new merch designs at the time. I still liked them, and if the situation presented itself, would clean them up, re-do them in illustrator and amend them for another band.

CRUEL HAND SHIRT DESIGN. I actually never got around to sending this one to the band. This was made a long time ago...then they signed to B9 and got that dude who does art that looks exactly like Pushead's to do their art. I ain't mad. Before you get all huffy and tell me that BITTER END used this design for a shirt, I'll tell you to learn your history and that 80's crossover band ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT actually had a shirt with this on it before that...and before ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT, Dalton Trumbo used it on the cover of his book "Johnny Got his Gun." So there.

I made this before Reaper was the juggernaut that it is today. I still think it'd make a rad shirt if it was all cleaned up in illustrator. Maybe if I'm feeling brave I'll email it to Patrick.

RIVAL MOB T-SHIRT DESIGN
I don't know why this is sideways. I can't figure out how to edit things in blogger. This was made back when the Rival Mob pretty much said they weren't going to make shirts. Times have changed. The band was still really appreciative of it and thanked me for being so stoked on their band that I'd do art for them (even when I wasn't asked!)

SWAMP THING SHIRT DESIGN. I did some of SWAMP THING's early shirts. I don't think I ever pursued this one much after I came up with it. A little tweaking and it would have been rad.

Design made for the band LUNCH BREAK. I'm not a huge fan of the band's name, but was happy with this design. I made this when I was first learning how to use illustrator so I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. The kid initially had an X on his hand, until the singer for the band got in touch and told me to take it off as he'd broken edge a few weeks earlier. I'm pretty sure I was a freshman in college when I did this one...
